Learn and improve crucial design sketching skill

Join the skill buildup workshop for common sketching techniques and tools.

The drawing course is an excellent fit for beginners and advanced artists. It introduces complete beginners to the most effective communication tool. At the same time, the sketching training refreshes working professionals with advanced tips and tricks.

In the workshop, we will practice the informative sketching type — the method used by designers to build and describe design items on paper. We will study how to make quick, designer quality sketches with just simple pen and paper.

Along with the meetings, we will revise techniques for building correct objects and bodies. Together we are going to deal with the basics of surfaces drawing and shading. By the end of the course, we will master the skill of capturing shapes and bodies from the world surrounding us.

In short, you get to practice
  • Straight lines and precise curves
  • Principles of perspective
  • Geometry of simple objects
  • Sophisticated morphology construction
  • Page composition and proportions
  • Objects correct shading

Workshop sessions

1. Establishing and practicing the basics

After an introduction to the course, we will have a skills assessment task - trial drawing of 3 test objects. The focus of the lesson is to set essential exercises for the following lessons. We will train the freehand line drawing using a pen. To improve the sketching skills, we will use the warmup exercise at the beginning of each session.

2. Understanding perspective and composition

Lines and shapes warmup for arm flow training. The lesson aimed at drawings of objects in one, two, three, and more vanishing points perspective. Introduction to views (2/3, 1/3, front, side) and compositions. Trials accompanied by tutor’s explanations in “one on one” format. Drawings of basic shapes: boxes, cylinders in perspective grid, assembly of sketches page composition.

3. Drawing compound morphology

Warmup exercise with the base shapes. Continuing the previous lesson, we are going to extend the studies on complex forms and combined forms: construction principles, objects cutting, and boolean intersections. The second part of the lesson deals with shading and gradations. Using complex bodies and learned composition principles, we will train an object morphology and various hatching techniques by capturing surrounding objects.

4. Expressing volumes and light

The lesson begins with the repetition of the learned materials and transitions to the basics of light and material finish. We will learn about one light source sketch: direct light, ambient reflections in the context of matt and gloss finishes (diffusion). The training focused on a pallet for volumes buildup. Introduction to markers, pastels, and pencils sketching. Extending the knowledge on complex bodies, we will train on speed drawing objects surrounding us.

" I can absolutely recommend it! E will show how to sketch – from basics to complex objects! "
– Dinko, Berlin
"It was a great re-introduction for me to design sketching, and E was a great instructor: energetic, friendly, really well-prepared, and extremely helpful with critiquing our sketches. It really helped me improve my basic sketching skills and become more confident and thoughtful as a sketcher."
– Secret participant, Berlin
"Without any relative academic background, I am very thankful for the chance to be able to get into this field. It would definitely help me as product manager in communicating our product design ideas to our manufacturers."
– Shuying, Berlin
